Effectivity
A parameter that defines the conditions under which a part, configuration, or engineering change is valid — typically expressed as a date range, serial number range, or lot number, determining which product units receive which version of a component.
Why it matters
Effectivity is the core mechanism for managing engineering changes in continuous production environments. Without it, every change must either be applied universally (impossible for parts already produced) or managed manually (error-prone and unscalable). Effectivity enables controlled, bounded transitions between product configurations.
