Intelligent (Significant) Part Numbering
A part numbering scheme in which attributes of the part — commodity class, material, product family, size — are encoded directly in the structure of the part number itself.
Why it matters
Intelligent numbering feels intuitive but creates long-term problems: when the encoded attributes change (part is used in a new product family, material is substituted), the part number becomes misleading and cannot be changed without enormous effort.
