Non-Significant (Dumb) Part Numbering
A part numbering scheme in which the part number is a meaningless sequential identifier with no embedded attribute information — all descriptive data is stored in separate searchable fields.
Why it matters
Non-significant numbering is more stable over time because the part number never becomes misleading as product attributes evolve. It requires discipline in populating descriptive fields but avoids the structural limitations of intelligent schemes.
